Substantivos contáveis têm plural e aceitam a/an e números (an apple, two apples); incontáveis não têm plural, não aceitam a/an e usam verbo no singular (water, money, information) — e várias palavras que o português conta, o inglês NÃO conta.

- I bought two mangoes at the market. — Comprei duas mangas na feira.
- I bought some rice. — Comprei (um pouco de) arroz.
Contáveis: como funcionam¶
São as "coisas" que você conta uma a uma — objetos, pessoas, lugares:

Regra prática: contável no singular nunca anda sozinho — precisa de a/an, the, my, this etc. (❌ I need flat. → ✅ I need a flat.)
Incontáveis: como funcionam¶
Não têm plural, não aceitam a/an, e o verbo fica no singular:

O choque com o português: os "falsos contáveis"¶
Aqui mora 80% dos erros de brasileiro. Em português contamos, em inglês não:

Como "contar" o incontável: a piece of, a cup of...¶
Quando precisa de unidade, o inglês usa um recipiente ou medida contável na frente:

Palavras que são as duas coisas¶
Algumas mudam de sentido conforme o uso:

Conexão com o que vem a seguir¶
Saber se a palavra é contável ou não decide o quantificador (detalhe no N1-09): many/few + contável plural (many flats), much/little + incontável (much money), some/any/a lot of servem para os dois.
Pegadinhas e erros comuns de brasileiros¶
- Plural em information — ❌ I need some informations. → ✅ I need some information.
- "An advice" — ❌ She gave me an advice. → ✅ ...some advice / ...a piece of advice.
- News com verbo plural — ❌ The news are good. → ✅ The news is good. (termina em -s, mas é singular!)
- "A bread" — ❌ I bought a bread. → ✅ I bought some bread / a loaf of bread.
- Contável singular pelado — ❌ We rented house. → ✅ We rented a house. (contável singular sempre com a/an, the, my...)
- "Furnitures" e "luggages" — ❌ Our furnitures arrived. → ✅ Our furniture arrived. (e verbo no singular)
